Egmont Finance Intelligence Unit Group

Specialized state structures (financial intelligence units, FIU) that are served to combat with money laundering and financing of terrorism have been established in many countries.

In June 1995, representatives of a number of state bodies and international organizations gathered at the Egmont-Arenberg Palace in Brussels to discuss money laundering and ways to overcome this global problem.

As a result of this first meeting, the Egmont Group was formed, which is an informal organization of state bodies, which are united by a common goal - to create a collective mechanism for strengthening cooperation and information exchange, which useful on detecting and combating money laundering and financing of terrorism.

The main goal of the organization is the establishment of an FIU forum that supports national anti-money laundering programs, including the expansion of information exchange, staff development, and the development of communication channels using the latest technologies.

The main documents of the Egmont Group, on which its activities are based, are the Statement of Purpose (originally adopted in Madrid on June 24, 1997) and the Principles of information exchange between Financial Intelligence Units, which are in addition to the Statement of Purpose of the Group Egmont.

In 2007, the founding document (Charter) of the Egmont Group was adopted and updated in 2013, according to which the Secretariat was established in Toronto, Canada.

The Egmont Group admits as its member the FIUs which fully comply to the definition of financial intelligence unit.

These FIUs should be operational and have the legal opportunity to exchange information with all partner FIUs on the basis of the Principles of Information Exchange.

The Financial Intelligence Unit of the Republic of Kazakhstan - the Committee on Financial Monitoring of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan having confirmed its compliance with the requirements for the FIU was admitted to the Egmont Financial Intelligence Unit in July 2011.
